Things I couldn't explain to my kids
We now live in an open-minded world where any kind of information is now available and accessible. We all know that! And no matter how much we try to hold certain things back from entering our children’s radar, we also know that it’s not realistic.
However, some topics are more difficult to explain to our children than others, but I believe that it is still better that they learn from us rather than the outside world.
You will notice in most of my articles that I don’t have or provide any solutions. But when we talk about parenting, since when was one single solution right anyways?! I always love to hear your thoughts, because after all, as parents we need to be there for each other.
I remember growing up and watching TV with my parents, you remember that, don’t you? We never had anything else to do i.e.: no tablets or phones. My parents would sit there watching and whenever there was a kissing scene, I remember one of them would automatically flip the channel. I would know right then that this was an inappropriate scene for someone my age to look at. So, I knew that it was wrong, but I did not understand why.
Fast forward to today, there are a lot of times when I am sitting with my children watching TV. They would be playing games on their tablets, and there it is: a kissing scene. Even on tablets, some advertisements would pop up as an animation of a couple kissing. And of course, my first reaction is to switch to another channel or to always keep an eye on their tablet screen as much as possible. Not because I don’t want my children to know about these things, but only because I have no idea what to say to them.
What do I tell them, and when? They are 6 and 3-year-old girls. They are too young, but as I said, we can’t completely control what they see and what they don’t. So instead, I ignore the conversation. Even as I write this, I am tongue-tied, now I understand why 30 years ago my parents could not say anything.
I know this topic may be a little out of the ordinary, but nonetheless, life, as it is now, is developing very fast. The access to content has never been easier with technology, and every one of us will want to ensure what kind of content our children have access to and at what age.
