Car seats are made to fit certain weights, heights and ages then the child moves to a booster seat usually between 4-8 years when the child has exceeded the height and weight limits of the car seat. The child needs to stay in the booster seat until the car seatbelt fits safely on the child when they sit in the car. This is usually when the child is 144.78 centimeters tall (4 foot 9 inches ) AND between 36-45 kg in weight (80-100 pounds) and at least 10-12 years old. The safe fit is when the shoulder strap fits halfway between the tip of the shoulder and the neck and when the lap strap fits just on the top of the child’s thighs. If the seat belt fits any other way it could injure the child’s neck or rupture his abdominal organs ( liver, spleen, intestines) in an impact. The child should also be able to sit all the way back in the seat of the car AND should be able to bend his legs at the knees when sitting and wearing the seat belt otherwise he still needs to be in a booster seat. It is not safe to use things to modify the fit of the straps because they make the seatbelts less effective.
