For young very young children, under the age of three, the recommendation is to focus on reading physical books together and to limit your child’s screen time to things that are interactive in nature and that also involve you. That said, access to quality books is sometimes difficult and storybook apps come in handy. For English books, we recommend A Story Before Bed. For Arabic, we recommend either Lamsa or 3asafeer. For the second part of your question, to interest your child in physical books, make reading together a part of your routine. Bedtime is the easiest time to integrate story telling, and you can use that time so that both of you can bond and unwind. Choose stories that are funny and/ or rhyme, get theatrical with your reading, and involve your child by asking questions about the story and linking it back to your own day to day life… Once you’ve established book time as a part of your routine, start taking the books beyond the page. If you’re reading books about ladybugs, make ladybug cookies. If you’re reading about a bear hunt, go on a bear hunt at home. The more books are intertwined with your routine and activities, the better.
